The Big Day | 26.7.14

wed-pics-18_

So here they are, finally, our wedding photos, not all of them but just a snapshot of the day, all taken by the talented Sarah Bunting of styling & events company, What Peggy Did Next. Sarah was once upon a time my Editor in Chief at the fashion & trends forecasting company I used to work for so it was lovely having someone I know being our photographer, although it made it all the more emotional! I’ve also included some lovely photos that my Dad took, as being another super talented photographer, he just couldn’t resist snapping away, as much as my Mum was trying to stop him!

We knew quite early on how we wanted our big day; relaxed, summery, rustic and outdoorsy with a lot of DIY. We really wanted the day to be individual to us, not just an off the shelf style wedding and it really was that as we had to source literally everything ourselves, from the flowers and decorations to the cutlery and placemats, EVERYTHING. And this was no mean feat I can tell you! Our venue, The Great Barn was literally a shell that was being renovated, to be completed by the time of our wedding, so there was a lot to do.

As my friends and family know quite well, I’m a worrier. I get anxious and tied up inside with just the thought of being late for a train or forgetting something when going away, so when deciding to go down this route of sourcing everything myself, I don’t think I realised how much pressure I was putting on myself. But everything seemed to come together quite coincidentally which was quite freaky at times but I kept taking it as a sign that everything would work out, and it really did. For example, we were just about to put a deposit down on a venue in the New Forest, which we loved but weren’t 100% on for a number of reasons, when Dan suggested we enquire about a local barn he knew of and used to go fishing near. It was a bit derelict but he had read in the paper that it was being taken over by a local theatre company. So, I called on the off chance, and it just so happened that they were just discussing the possibility of holding weddings there and we were the first to enquire – so we arranged a meeting.  The barn is just 5 minutes from our house, was under half the price of the other venue and was 10 times as beautiful, we found a winner!

There were a lot of DIY elements of the day which included all the stationery, designed by myself, reflecting the high summer wild flower theme of the day – stay tuned for pictures! The flowers were all grown by my mother-in-law and she even arranged them all too – all the bouquets/button holes, head dresses, ceremony archway, the strawberry plant table plan and strawberry hanging baskets! The strawberry idea came from my now husband as our local area was once known as a big strawberry growing community. The pom pom decorations were made by my bridesmaids, the ornate glassware and jam jars were collected by my friends, family and I and the blackboard signs were made by my Dad & written by me. My Mum made and decorated the delicious fruit wedding cake and the dessert table was made possible by my friends & family. We even put the bar together ourselves – we sourced some old wine barrels and a reclaimed table top for our second bar. All of these things were really important as it meant everything was unique to our wedding.

Now to talk about the dress. This was another strange coincidence as I had always imagined the kind of dress I wanted and even considered getting it made as I had sketched my dream dress shortly after Dan proposed – why wait eh! But then by some magical intervention, I didn’t need to as I found it, already brought to life by Spanish wedding dress label Pronovias. It was quite scary how accurate it was to my drawing; the graduating lace with illusion neckline, subtle fishtail silhouette and open lace back – it was clearly meant to be! And the fact it was by Pronovias was also quite funny. One of my bridesmaids had worked in a bridal shop since school and with me studying fashion at college, she had given me a bag of scrap fabric from the shop to use in one of my projects, along with a massive Pronovias catalogue she thought I might like, which I LOVED and still have to this day, so to find my dream dress and then to realise it was a Pronovias was another meant to be moment!

My shoes, had to be blue (I was often called smurfette by my friends when I was younger) and I found a gorgeous pair (after much searching) with asymmetric straps in suede at Next for just £30 and they were soooo comfortable. I went for minimal accessories and initially even dismissed the idea of a veil, until my sister found the most gorgeous elbow length design with lace trim that perfectly matched the dress. I was having one of my dress fittings when she just plonked it on my head, and that was that. I always knew I wanted a floral headdress as well so I decided to have both a day and an evening look. For jewellery, I chose to wear the first pair of earrings Dan ever bought me, I borrowed my Nan’s engagement ring (something borrowed) from my Mum. stacked on my heart ring I have worn since I was 10 (something old) and my parents bought me a beautiful gold bracelet for the occasion (something new) too.

The day itself was incredible and went just far too quickly. It was the hottest day of the year, and as our best man said in his speech, “a great day for a wedding but not for suits”. Considering my rep for being a worrier, I still can’t believe how relaxed I was the whole day, especially in the morning, even my hairdresser said how I was the most relaxed bride she has ever worked with! But I guess I saw no point in stressing, there was nothing more I could do, all the planning and set up had been done, and it was finally time to enjoy it and marry my best friend on our 11 year anniversary!

There are just too many special moments throughout the day to mention but some that stick firmly in my mind include:
– Holding my Dad’s hand as he walked me down the isle.
– Dan holding my hand with the biggest smile on his face throughout the ceremony.
– My bridesmaid Rosie’s beautiful ceremony reading that she wrote herself.
– The FOOD (of course) – we had a sit down hog roast, with homemade apple sauce, coleslaw, corn on the cob, Mediterranean veg and roast potatoes with a help yourself dessert table made by our friends and family.
– My Dad’s and my husband’s speeches which were so heart warming. They were both so nervous but did so well.
– Dan & I playing table football with our little cousins, and me being a little bit too competitive.
– My sister/Maid of Honour performing ‘I’d rather be’ by Clean Bandit at our evening reception.
– My Bridesmaid Kelly performing a song she had wrote just for the occasion, which made me cry, a lot.
– Our first dance to Ed Sheeran’s ‘Kiss Me’ and coming home with a mountain of wedding cake and sitting up with my husband eating cake, absolutely buzzing, reliving the whole day. It was perfect.

My advice for any brides to-be out there, which I was given myself, is to take the time to step back and take it in throughout the day, these are moments that you will really remember. Also, it may sound like a given, but at so many weddings, you barley see the bride and groom actually enjoying the day together, so make the effort to spend as much time greeting and chatting to guests together. Dan and I made a little pact to stick together and am so glad that we did.

Fashion Inspiration: Treasures Of The Royal Courts: Tudors, Stewarts And The Russian Tsars

11._Portrait_of_an_Unknown_woman

A few months ago, I attended a couple of exhibitions for trend research at my old job at MPDClick so thought I’d also share my findings on FFS!

One of my favourite museums in London, the V&A, earlier this year played host to an exclusive collection of royal gifts that were exchanged between Tudor England and the Russian Tsars in the exhibition ‘Treasures of the Royal Courts: Tudors, Stewarts and the Russian Tsars’. I attended the exhibition to gain inspiration for one of our future Spring Summer 15 trends which celebrates the re-birth of luxury and new perceptions of royalty.

A wealth of inspiration is on offer at this exhibition that can be directly applied to the fashion and design industries for future ranges. One of the first pieces on show was the towering armour of King Henry V111, exaggerated in size or not, the scale of this suit of armour was impressive to say the least. The heraldic engraved trim motifs could be translated as a border print on apparel, footwear and accessory designs.

The range of jewellery on show was truly awe-inspiring, with magnifying glasses on hand to enable closer inspection of the sheer detail and craftsmanship of each piece. Cameo pendants, both classic and coloured were abundant as were miniature portrait pendants which can reinterpreted using contemporary famous faces for Spring Summer 15 in trend-led colourways. Emeralds and rubys stood out as the preferred jewels of choice while pearl clusters and drops, serve as essential embellishment for jewellery, apparel, accessory and footwear design. Commemorative coins on display also provide inspiration for jewellery ranges; elements of which can be included in costume drop earrings or pendants for the season.

Key motifs to consider for graphic and print include the Royal Arms, Three Lions, Crests and the Tudor Rose. The Pheonix (symbolising rebirth and chastity) and the Pelican (representing self sacrifice) are particularly important birds of the time in reference to Queen Elizabeth 1, as seen in the famous ‘Pheonix’ and ‘Pelican’ portraits of the Queen, holding them each as decorative pendants. Star, sun and moon motifs in metals on jewellery also proved popular of the time, offering graphic, print and decorative inspiration.

For womenswear, off-the-shoulder sweetheart necklines prevailed as a progressive update from SS14. We can also see long gloves in lightweight fabrications being key to occasion wear and red carpet fashions. For menswear, armour and sash inspired asymmetric lines stood out as key shape definitions and placement print inspiration.

Although this exhibition has now finished, I expect the current ‘Pearls’ exhibition at the V&A to be just as inspirational, in keeping with this royal trend. Has anyone visited ‘Pearls’ yet? Would love to hear what you thought!

Fashion Week Round-Up – finally!

With these past two months being a bit of a whirlwind – what with bringing up a litter of puppies and starting a new job; all four Fashion Weeks have gone past and I only managed to catch a few glimpses of the new SS14 season on Vogue and Instagram. As I’ve been catching up and identifying themes, I can see the trends my previous Editor in Chief had predicted, as I had the season before, and the season before that. Its a funny thing working in the forecasting industry and knowing what’s coming. So I can now share a few trend insights in the form of my favourite looks:

Blue checks
ss14runwaypicks_
Balmain, Jenny Packham, Charlotte Ronson, Sister by Sibling.

The first dress by Balmain is just crafted perfection. I love everything about it, the neckline, cross-over skirt, lattice and lacework and especially the hard metal accessories-I really want this outfit! The evening checked dress by Jenny Packham is just divine with the sheer short sleeves and flowing silhouette. The one item I will be hunting down though is a version of this Charlotte Ronson check maxi skirt – can imagine this going with a lot in my wardrobe – I do like a good maxi skirt. There’s a real 90’s feel about the last two looks which is key for the season and I’m a big fan of the pastel gingham pencil skirt x denim t-shirt.

Futuristic florals
ss14runwaypicks2
Balmain, Matthew Williamson, Erdem, Peter Pilotto

The sculptural silhouettes of each look in this board really enhance the super contemporary floral lace and embroidery. It really is the most beautiful trend of the season. This level of craftsmanship is now becoming the covetable standard as part of a bigger artisan enthused design and consumer trend. Quality and beauty go hand in hand.

Sheer structuress14runwaypicks3
Alice & Olivia, Antipodium, Erdem, 3.1 Philip Lim

Sheer structure has got to be the sexiest trend. Sure to be interpreted on the high street, this is a trend I will definitely be looking out for! Playful stripes, dots and pleats are the details upgrading this favourite look for SS14.

Fitted Cropsss14runwaypicks
Henry Holland, Alice & Olivia, Balenciaga, Alice & Olivia

Crop tops go sophisticated for SS14, seen in fitted forms at Henry Holland, Antonio Marrass, Balenciaga and Alice & Olivia. This elegant interpretation of this popular 90’s silhouette is sure to be picked up by all markets and price points with co-ord looks making a high fashion statement. I particularly love the capped sleeve floral design at Balenciaga, I would style it with some high waisted jeans and chunky heels.

High cream tea
ss14runwaypicks5
Proenza Schouler, The Row, Oscar de la Renta, Marchesa

This cream story is just pure bliss. I particular love the wrap over top teamed with the metallic pleated skirt by Proenza, just perfect for a summer garden party or wedding. The long sleeve midi dress by The Row, is a great transitional shape for spring, and the hat with face veil – just wow! Next, the dreamy top/skirt combo by Oscar de la Renta is given an edge with embellished ankle boots, I love the styling of this look. And finally, the fringed goddess dress by Marchesa, need I say more?

90’s styless14runwaypicks4
Jonathan Saunders, Zac Posen, Oscar de la Renta, Stella McCartney

Spaghetti strap dresses are key for the season, especially in raspberry tones. Silhouettes have to be slinky to make it work and we can be sure to see these shapes hitting in the high street next summer. The last two looks showcase some beautiful textural fabrics and are a real favourite for me, as seen at Oscar and Stella McCartney.

There were some real stand out collections this season, I just need to make even more time for next season’s fashion week. I’m looking forward to Autumn/Winter 14/15 already!

Long time friends, Abbie and I have been passionate about thrift fashion for years but were still astounded at the number of people who still wouldn’t set foot in a thrift/charity store. Wanting to take out the stigma attached to second hand clothing, we decided to showcase the best in high quality thrift fashion and present them in seasonal trend-led ‘Colour Edits’ to show how on-trend and seriously affordable second hand style can really be.

Fashion: All White at Cannes

As you may know, Cannes Film Festival has been in full swing this week and I had to post about these three absolute beauties as some of my favourite all-white dresses from the red, well blue carpet at the amFAR gala last night.

Brit model Rosie Huntington-Whitely rarely puts a foot wrong and shows she can do simple as well as all-out embellished glamour in a stunning strapless Dior dress. Next, Brazilian model, Ana Beatriz Barros wears a gorgeous drop shoulder sheer panel number, although I cant find the designer name! And Sharon Stone, well she just glows and still has a figure to die for at the age of 55! I love the neckline and low cut back of this Roberto Cavalli dress and modest train, coz hey why not have a train when you can!

Which one’s your favourite?

For my day blog, the Trend Journal, it was my turn to share my current inspirations, so here it is:

Clockwise from top left:

  1. French label Scandele offer the most gorgeous lingerie and shapewear in flat jacquard lace with smooth seams for invisible lines. Vintage inspired details combine with contemporary finishes to create the perfect hour glass figure for the big day.
  2. For a more specialist option, Bordelle present a unique selection of bondage style dresses for some extra special seduction on the honeymoon.
  3. I love the deep-V back detail on Stella McCartney’s sleepwear gown available at Fox & Rose; simple yet beautiful.
  4. I’ve recently found this great London based label, Elle & Cee who manufacture in the UK and they present a great selection of trend-led ranges as well as this scalloped ‘Princesse’ lace garter lightly dusted with pearls and diamanté.
  5. Also from Elle & Cee is this champagne lace and frilled cup bodysuit. This is a beautiful contemporary alternative for the modern bride.
  6. For a more traditional option, Stella McCartney offers this timeless suspender and garter set in white lace.

Fashion Week: Better late than never!

You may notice Fashion Week passed and I didn’t post a picture of a single outfit – unfortunately this season I didn’t have the pleasure of working with the runway images but I did spot this little beauty of a dress by 3.1 Philip Lim and now finally have the time to share!

I just love the rich navy blue, the flattering panelling and the drop shoulder sleeves, just perfect and all kinds of me! I need to get me some knee high boots as well it seems in time for next winter!

I’ve also been attending the autumn/winter 13/14 fashion press days for work and spotted an absolutely gorgeous Alice by Temperley gown (see below) which is now on my wishlist to wear to some swanky occasion – hell, I’d be happy just to wear this in my bedroom in front of the mirror ha! I’ll be posting a round up of the season soon!

Fashion: Colour Musings…

This week it was my turn to provide an insight into what I’m up and inspired by on my work blog, MPDClick’s Trend Journal. As I’m heading up the colour pages for our forthcoming MPDVision magazine, I have been looking to a range of (highly addictive) resources to represent our colour inspiration for MPDClick’s three forecasted trends for A/W 14/15. I personally love the vivid tonal bleeds and unexpected contrasts represented in trend 1 (top two images), especially for winter. This is my favourite colour palette so far and definitely one that I shall be investing in when the time comes! Click here to read more!

Fashion: More from Paris Fashion Week!

Clockwise: Balenciaga, Kenzo, Carven, Sharon Wauchob, Paul & Joe, Valentino, Dior, Rabih Kayrouz, Roland Mouret.

Here are some more of my highlights from Paris Fashion Week! A favourite trend of mine for SS13 is feminine artisan construction, proving popular at Balenciaga, Carven and Valentino, while the statement fit & flare dress at Dior is a classic shape to buy into. I just love the cropped jackets at Kenzo and Roland Mouret – a more wearable style for ss13, and even more tempting with a good print! Casual vests teamed with flowing maxi skirts and macs will be a styling trend I’ll be going for as will the gorgeous sports luxe trend – all sharp raglan sleeves and block colour – as seen at Rabih Kayrouz. Can’t wait for next summer already!

Fashion: Paris Fashion Week Highlights – Dries Van Noten

Now there were ALOT of beautifully crafted collections at PFW, more highlights of which shall be blogged about soon, but Dries van Noten’s was the one for me!

Checks often get used season after season but these colourways styled with such feminine fabrics and chic silhouettes give them a whole new lease of life. Soft tailoring and florals get refreshed in a sophisticated muted palette of reds, vintage blue, green and antique white. The styling really is essential in mixing up the prints subtly, offering up a chic grunge look – just love every piece!
