Blog worthy wedding?

When trying to pick photos of my wedding day to share here on my blog, it was more than difficult trying to choose just a few favourites. And I must admit, in the back of my mind while going through all the pictures, I was thinking – is this the kind of photo that wedding blog, Love my Dress would feature? Sad, I know. But when you become so immersed in all the beautifully styled weddings online, the bar is immediately set to this standard, which got me thinking about the pressure of having a blog/Pinterest worthy wedding.

Of course feeling pressure to have the perfect wedding is quite normal, but looking back, I can’t help but feel that Pinterest and wedding blogs (as much as I love them) now add a tremendous amount to that pressure, so much so, that it can be pretty overwhelming. In the initial days of planning, Pinterest and wedding blogs gave me so much valuable inspiration as well as giving me the confidence to go with ideas that weren’t so traditional. For this, I couldn’t dream of planning my wedding without them. But in the months running up to the big day, I had well and truly become addicted. I had a daily routine of checking my favourite blogs (Love My Dress, Rock My Wedding and Style Me Pretty) every morning before even functioning and then sifting through Pinterest on my lunch breaks at work, just in case I had missed an amazing decoration/styling detail that I could use for my own big day. The fear of missing out on new wedding ideas and obsessing over the details had its firm grip on me.

This obsession not only reeked havoc with my own planning by holding me back from actually doing all the DIY details I already had on my long list(s), but it also drove my then fiancé crazy by constantly putting new ideas on the table. Looking back, I can now see how easily I got lost in inspiration and how it almost overshadowed my original ideas with even more things that I could potentially do. (This happens quite a lot in my life, constantly dreaming, not enough doing.)

Then one night after giving up trying to select a few ‘blog worthy’ pics, I went up to bed when I realised I had already, unconsciously, picked my favourite photo from the the big day – and it was already framed on my bedside table. It isn’t a detail shot of the table decoration or a photo showing off the summer colour scheme of the day. It’s a simple black & white shot of my husband with the most gorgeous smile looking at me with my back to the camera, holding hands during the ceremony. This photo not only makes me smile from ear to ear every time I look at it, but it reminds me of the real and most important reason this day happened.

However, as much as you do remember the most important reason for getting married, its still difficult to escape the details – wedding envy is a real thing you know. In today’s social media & blog saturated world, you just can’t help it. Even though I was lucky enough not to have any pushy family members or friends telling me how I should plan my wedding, Pinterest & wedding blogs unwittingly took their place, and I was only too happy to oblige. But as many articles and blogs say when advising on how to deal with difficult members of the wedding party; just stay true to your own style and ideas and stick with what makes you and your partner happy on the day. It really doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks, even your favourite wedding blog.

So, Yes Pinterest and wedding blogs are a great place of endless inspiration for your dream day, and they have helped enormously in helping brides overcome outdated wedding ‘musts’, but once you have that inspiration, and you know how you want your day to look, STOP. Just stop looking, and start turning that inspiration into a reality.

Or am I the only one who’s had this problem??

The Big Day | 26.7.14

So here they are, finally, our wedding photos, not all of them but just a snapshot of the day, all taken by the talented Sarah Bunting of styling & events company, What Peggy Did Next. Sarah was once upon a time my Editor in Chief at the fashion & trends forecasting company I used to work for so it was lovely having someone I know being our photographer, although it made it all the more emotional! I’ve also included some lovely photos that my Dad took, as being another super talented photographer, he just couldn’t resist snapping away, as much as my Mum was trying to stop him!

We knew quite early on how we wanted our big day; relaxed, summery, rustic and outdoorsy with a lot of DIY. We really wanted the day to be individual to us, not just an off the shelf style wedding and it really was that as we had to source literally everything ourselves, from the flowers and decorations to the cutlery and placemats, EVERYTHING. And this was no mean feat I can tell you! Our venue, The Great Barn was literally a shell that was being renovated, to be completed by the time of our wedding, so there was a lot to do.

As my friends and family know quite well, I’m a worrier. I get anxious and tied up inside with just the thought of being late for a train or forgetting something when going away, so when deciding to go down this route of sourcing everything myself, I don’t think I realised how much pressure I was putting on myself. But everything seemed to come together quite coincidentally which was quite freaky at times but I kept taking it as a sign that everything would work out, and it really did. For example, we were just about to put a deposit down on a venue in the New Forest, which we loved but weren’t 100% on for a number of reasons, when Dan suggested we enquire about a local barn he knew of and used to go fishing near. It was a bit derelict but he had read in the paper that it was being taken over by a local theatre company. So, I called on the off chance, and it just so happened that they were just discussing the possibility of holding weddings there and we were the first to enquire – so we arranged a meeting.  The barn is just 5 minutes from our house, was under half the price of the other venue and was 10 times as beautiful, we found a winner!

There were a lot of DIY elements of the day which included all the stationery, designed by myself, reflecting the high summer wild flower theme of the day – stay tuned for pictures! The flowers were all grown by my mother-in-law and she even arranged them all too – all the bouquets/button holes, head dresses, ceremony archway, the strawberry plant table plan and strawberry hanging baskets! The strawberry idea came from my now husband as our local area was once known as a big strawberry growing community. The pom pom decorations were made by my bridesmaids, the ornate glassware and jam jars were collected by my friends, family and I and the blackboard signs were made by my Dad & written by me. My Mum made and decorated the delicious fruit wedding cake and the dessert table was made possible by my friends & family. We even put the bar together ourselves – we sourced some old wine barrels and a reclaimed table top for our second bar. All of these things were really important as it meant everything was unique to our wedding.

Now to talk about the dress. This was another strange coincidence as I had always imagined the kind of dress I wanted and even considered getting it made as I had sketched my dream dress shortly after Dan proposed – why wait eh! But then by some magical intervention, I didn’t need to as I found it, already brought to life by Spanish wedding dress label Pronovias. It was quite scary how accurate it was to my drawing; the graduating lace with illusion neckline, subtle fishtail silhouette and open lace back – it was clearly meant to be! And the fact it was by Pronovias was also quite funny. One of my bridesmaids had worked in a bridal shop since school and with me studying fashion at college, she had given me a bag of scrap fabric from the shop to use in one of my projects, along with a massive Pronovias catalogue she thought I might like, which I LOVED and still have to this day, so to find my dream dress and then to realise it was a Pronovias was another meant to be moment!

My shoes, had to be blue (I was often called smurfette by my friends when I was younger) and I found a gorgeous pair (after much searching) with asymmetric straps in suede at Next for just £30 and they were soooo comfortable. I went for minimal accessories and initially even dismissed the idea of a veil, until my sister found the most gorgeous elbow length design with lace trim that perfectly matched the dress. I was having one of my dress fittings when she just plonked it on my head, and that was that. I always knew I wanted a floral headdress as well so I decided to have both a day and an evening look. For jewellery, I chose to wear the first pair of earrings Dan ever bought me, I borrowed my Nan’s engagement ring (something borrowed) from my Mum. stacked on my heart ring I have worn since I was 10 (something old) and my parents bought me a beautiful gold bracelet for the occasion (something new) too.

The day itself was incredible and went just far too quickly. It was the hottest day of the year, and as our best man said in his speech, “a great day for a wedding but not for suits”. Considering my rep for being a worrier, I still can’t believe how relaxed I was the whole day, especially in the morning, even my hairdresser said how I was the most relaxed bride she has ever worked with! But I guess I saw no point in stressing, there was nothing more I could do, all the planning and set up had been done, and it was finally time to enjoy it and marry my best friend on our 11 year anniversary!

There are just too many special moments throughout the day to mention but some that stick firmly in my mind include:
– Holding my Dad’s hand as he walked me down the isle.
– Dan holding my hand with the biggest smile on his face throughout the ceremony.
– My bridesmaid Rosie’s beautiful ceremony reading that she wrote herself.
– The FOOD (of course) – we had a sit down hog roast, with homemade apple sauce, coleslaw, corn on the cob, Mediterranean veg and roast potatoes with a help yourself dessert table made by our friends and family.
– My Dad’s and my husband’s speeches which were so heart warming. They were both so nervous but did so well.
– Dan & I playing table football with our little cousins, and me being a little bit too competitive.
– My sister/Maid of Honour performing ‘I’d rather be’ by Clean Bandit at our evening reception.
– My Bridesmaid Kelly performing a song she had wrote just for the occasion, which made me cry, a lot.
– Our first dance to Ed Sheeran’s ‘Kiss Me’ and coming home with a mountain of wedding cake and sitting up with my husband eating cake, absolutely buzzing, reliving the whole day. It was perfect.

My advice for any brides to-be out there, which I was given myself, is to take the time to step back and take it in throughout the day, these are moments that you will really remember. Also, it may sound like a given, but at so many weddings, you barley see the bride and groom actually enjoying the day together, so make the effort to spend as much time greeting and chatting to guests together. Dan and I made a little pact to stick together and am so glad that we did.

The 1 Year Wedding Countdown…

With the 1year countdown to our wedding now on, we’ve got a clear idea of what we want and things seem to be coming together nicely and quite coincidentally! Not trying to jinx it or anything but it seems when you are more relaxed about things, and take on one thing at a time, its alot easier to handle and organise the massive list. But I’m certainly not saying its not stressful, my god it really is at some points. You just cant help stressing about even the details, but as soon as you realise its getting too much, try and take a step back and do something else. Or until your fiance makes you!

So far we have secured a venue, which is a lovely medieval barn currently being rennovated so we’ll be one of the first couples to get married, and even better its just 10minutes from where we live! I’ve also sorted my dress and the bridesmaids dresses which is a big relief. The dresses are even better than I could have imagined, and makes picturing the day even more realistic which is very exciting! We’r also in talks with a caterer and have sorted the marquee so are definitely making headway with the planning.

The trial run for the weddding flowers, of which my mother-in-law has kindly offered to grow for us was also a success. We’r planning on having a real summery mix of sunflowers, cornflowers and sweetpeas amongst others, so very bright, (as you can see in the inspiration board above). I’m also in the process of sending out our save the date cards and designing the invites, which I could spend all day doing – just so much fun and I love the fact that they are so personalised.

I’m not really aiming for a ‘vintage’ wedding theme but instead a crafted, rustic feel in keeping with the barn, along with a vibrant summer feel. I guess its got vintage style with some of the props we’ll be using but hopefully presented in quite a contemporary way.

I cant take credit for the lovely images above via Pinterest, but it sums up my inspiration from the addictive world of online wedding decoration. Any tips/pointers on wedding planning or decoration ideas do comment below!

The 1 Year Wedding Countdown…

Inspiration: Rustic, outdoor and d.i.y vintage wedding

As you know, my boyfriend recently proposed, so not so surprisingly, my thoughts have been dedicated to all things wedding related, from venues to table settings and more importantly, THE dress. For my contribution to the weekly ‘Click Edit’ series on MPDClick’s Trend Journal I just couldn’t resist sharing my wedding inspiration. I would love to say I sourced these images primarily for this edition of Click Edit, but no, they’ve been part of a secret folder I’ve been collating for a while now much to my boyfriend’s amusement and slight horror. A rustic, outdoor affair with a vintage D.I.Y twist is my ideal theme for the big day and here’s the inspiration.

Clockwise from top left:

1. Old church pews and mis-matched chairs unified with white cushions and flowers, as captured by photographer Jose Villa, would create the perfect outdoor wedding scene, the only problem is relying on the English weather!

2. Sunflowers have long been my favourite flower so they will definitely be a big part of the flower arrangements. The pops of cornflower blue and berry purple in this bouquet make the perfect summer contrast. This photo was taken at D.I.Y bride Emily Carlill’s wedding, visit her blog here.

3. I love the idea of bringing the outdoors in with beautiful trees acting as the marquee support, a great idea I shall definitely be looking into. I found this image on Brooklyn florist Amy Merrick’s Instagram profile – which is very addictive, visit her website here.

4. I’ve already started collecting glassware for possible table settings similar to this example found here – think vintage milk bottles with hessian string and fabrics for decoration, simple yet effective.

5. I think a bucket of ‘dancing shoes’ is an absolute essential as captured by photographer Joshua Gull, as wedding’s nearly always end up with a barefoot dance floor!

6. Sticking to the D.I.Y theme I love the idea of serving Pimms and cocktails in old jam jars giving a unique touch to an informal reception.

Now I was going to post some pictures of potential dress ideas, but being such a personal decision, I’m going to hold off and keep you in suspense!

Life: Unexpected Proposals

After having the best Christmas since I was a little girl waiting for Santa, this week I’ve been winding down nicely, watching loads of films and spending time with family and friends and of course the dog. So when the boyfriend and I took Jess (our dog) for a morning walk at the picturesque nature reserve a short drive away, I was completely taken aback at what happened next.

We stopped at our favourite spot, just taking it all in and of course I couldn’t resist snapping the gorgeous winter scenery (above), then just as I was about to walk on, Danny suddenly dropped to one knee and proposed! It was perfect, although at first I didn’t realise what he was doing and told him to get up as he was making his jeans dirty then got a tad hysterical once I saw him pulling a ring out of his pocket and then Jess decided it was a perfect time to chase a squirrel at full pelt meaning we had to chase after her, but I wouldn’t of had it any other way. Oh and of course I said yes!

I just love how much of a surprise it was, not having a clue on Christmas and New Years Eve, but instead making it completely unexpected, simple, meaningful and all the more special. And now I just cant wait to say ‘I Do’ to my best friend who I’m in love with and will be spending the rest of my life with.

So, yes F.F.S readers, there will now be quite a bit of wedding content on here as I plan, share my ideas and look for inspiration for my 2014 wedding, so please bear with! I will also try and get all my Christmas food posts ready soon so there is lots of content to come!
